In June our Executive Director Michelle Dunn Marsh and Gallery Director Ann Pallesen attended the award ceremony for the annual Washington State High School Photography Competition to select the PCNW choice award recipients and honorable mention recipients. Each participating high school earned a ranking for overall work while individual finalists were awarded various exhibition awards from outside organizations. Michelle and Ann selected two PCNW choice award recipients and two honorable mention recipients from the individual finalists.
Here are the 2014 Photographic Center Northwest’s Washington State High School Photography Competition Award Holders!
PCNW Choice Award Recipients:
Rogers High School, Puyallup Washington
Title: “Contemplation” Inkjet Print, 2014
“My picture started as a school project, the goal was to replicate an original glass print photo. I was determined to set the picture in glass just as the originals were. Even though setting the picture seemed to be quite the challenge, as I may have broken a few pieces of glass in the process. I have always loved black and white photos and this project really took in to the next level. “
Seattle Acadamy, Seattle Washington
Title: “Swim” Injet Print, 2013
“This photo is from a photo series titled “In My Dreams.” My goal
for this shoot was to evoke the vibe of the future from the 1960’s
perspective. I feel there is something ethereal and unknown about
water that mimics feelings about the future, so I chose a pool for the
location. I styled four girls in bright fabrics, tin foil, glitter,
holographic shoes, umbrellas, and hair buns which is what I dream
about in the future. The photo series is a dreamy vision of the girls

University Prep High School, Seattle Washington
Title: “pas de deux” Inkjet Print, 2013
“The idea behind my photo was to contrast the softness of a ballerina or in this case two against the rugged backdrop of the city. I took inspiration from a Facebook page called the ballerina project which accomplishes the same objective of the soft versus rugged. “
Garfield High School, Seattle Washington
Title: “Unknown”

With seventy high schools participating in this annual photography competition and over one thousand students, Stadium High School from Tacoma Washington took the trophy with 25 team points. PCNW is very proud to be a part of this state wide youth photography competition and encourages all high school students practicing photography to engage in this program next year.
